Frequently asked questions

Find answers to some of the most common questions about our orthodontic services for children and adults at The Oakwood Clinic.

Do I need a referral from the dentist to book an orthodontic appointment at The Oakwood Clinic?

No, you don't need a referral. You can contact us directly to book an appointment with our consultant orthodontist here in North London. Whether you’re considering orthodontic treatment or just looking for a consultation, we’ll be happy to guide you through the process.

How do I choose which type of brace to have?

At The Oakwood Clinic, we understand that choosing the right brace can feel overwhelming. That’s why we take the time to discuss all the options available to you during a free consultation. We’ll explore the different types of braces, explaining the benefits and risks of each one, so you can make an informed decision. Our goal is to find the best treatment for your specific needs, ensuring you feel confident and comfortable every step of the way.

How long will treatment take?

The duration of your treatment depends on your unique needs and the type of alignment required. In some cases, if only the front 6 teeth need straightening, treatment can take as little as 6 months. However, every patient is different, and we tailor the treatment to ensure the best results.

On average, you’ll see significant improvement within 6 months, and we’ll work with you to complete your treatment as quickly as possible while maintaining high standards. At The Oakwood Clinic, we won’t rush your treatment - our priority is achieving the perfect smile for you, even if it takes a little longer.

Is orthodontic treatment painful?

It’s common to experience some discomfort, especially in the beginning, as your teeth start to move. You might feel some aching or tenderness in your gums, but this usually fades within a few days. Fitting the braces themselves is generally painless, and no anaesthetic is required.

Everyone experiences discomfort differently, so we recommend taking your usual pain relief for a day or two if needed. Our team is here to support you through the process and ensure you’re as comfortable as possible.

How often will I need an appointment?

You will typically need to visit us every 4 to 10 weeks for regular check-ups and adjustments. We understand that life can get busy, so we offer flexible scheduling options to fit your needs and offer remote monitoring for treatments such as Invisalign. At The Oakwood Clinic, we’re committed to making the process as convenient as possible while ensuring you get the care you deserve.

Do I still need to visit the dentist while wearing braces?

Yes, it’s important to continue seeing your dentist every 6 months while undergoing orthodontic treatment. Regular dental visits ensure your overall oral health is maintained, and it’s crucial to keep your hygiene routine in check with regular cleanings. Our team here in Oakwood will work closely with your dentist to ensure comprehensive care throughout your treatment.

Are there any foods I can’t eat while wearing braces?

If you're wearing fixed braces, you’ll need to avoid certain foods to prevent damage. Hard foods like raw vegetables, hard sweets, and nuts, as well as sticky foods like caramel, chewing gum, and toffee, should be limited. However, if you choose aligners, such as Invisalign, there are no food restrictions since you can remove the aligners while eating and drinking. We’ll provide you with all the advice you need to make the most of your treatment and lifestyle.
