Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need a referral from the dentist to book an orthodontic appointment?
No. You can call us directly and book an appointment with the consultant orthodontist if you want to arrange a consultation.
How do I choose which type of brace to have?
We will discuss all the possible types of brace that can be used for your problem, together with the risks and benefits of each one. We’ll work with you to develop the best treatment to meet your concerns.
How long will treatment take?
Simple straightening can sometimes be carried out as quickly as 6 months, particularly if it’s only the front 6 teeth. Every case is different and therefore some cases are quicker to treat than others. On average you will see a significant improvement within 6 months.
We aim to finish your treatment as quickly as possible as we know you don't want to wear braces for too long, but we also won't rush through your treatment and put a time limit on it. Our aim is to make sure you are happy with your teeth so if we need to spend a bit longer working towards that perfection, then we will do that to get the very best for you.
Is treatment painful?
A degree of discomfort is likely to start with. You can expect some aching and tenderness in the gums as the teeth start to move, but this mostly wears off after a few days.
Fitting the brace should not be painful and no anaesthetic is needed.
The amount of discomfort varies enormously from person to person and it may be helpful to take your normal painkillers for a day or two.
How often will I need an appointment?
You will usually need regular appointments every four to ten weeks. We know life can get in the way of these things, so we’re as flexible as possible to meet your needs.
Do I still need to visit the dentist while wearing braces?
Yes, it is important to continue to visit your dentist every 6 months, as normal, while wearing braces. It’s also important to continue receiving your hygiene cleans with your dentist or hygienist.
Are there any foods I can’t eat while wearing braces?
If you are wearing fixed braces, you should avoid hard food like raw vegetables, hard sweets, nuts and crusty breads and sticky food such as caramel, chewing gum and toffee. However if you wear aligners, such as Invisalign, there are no dietary restrictions as they can be removed for eating and drinking.
